Weekly Round-Up
In a week where Rishi Sunak will have hoped for an end to the chaos embroiling the Government, he just can’t seem to escape it.
It’s now the turn of the Deputy Prime Minister, facing serious allegations of bullying from staff across Whitehall, with senior figures within his own party briefing journalists that he should be the next cabinet minister to be shown the door.
But the Prime Minister’s authority and leadership is so weak, that he seems totally unable to get a grip of the situation.
He is showing time and time again that he is too weak to manage his own party, let alone manage the affairs of the country.
He is simply not up to the job.
British Shipbuilding
This week I pressed Defence ministers on their total failure to stand up for our fantastic British shipbuilding industry.
Rather than bring the jobs and opportunities that Britain so desperately needs, they have sent them overseas through their shoddy management.
You can watch my question here: https://bit.ly/BritishShipbuilding.
Hysteroscopy
In my role as a Shadow Health Minister, I responded to a Westminster Hall Debate on the state of Hysteroscopy services.
Too many women going through Hysteroscopy are suffering incredible pain and are not getting the information they need to make informed choices about their care.
Opposition Day Debate on Neighbourhood Policing
I joined Labour colleagues in voting to give our communities the neighbourhood police they need, shamefully voted down by the Tories.
The Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Enfield, designed to build bridges with local communities and provide an active police presence are simply unable to do so, such is the depth of the workforce crisis in policing.
They are often pulled onto frontline response calls, because there simply aren’t the officers to cope.
Only Labour has a credible plan. which will put 13,000 oficers back into neighbourhood policing, keeping our communities safe.
Maternity Services
Yesterday I visited a group of new mums, representing a range of support organisations, in Thurrock to discuss the state of local maternity services, after some deeply troubling reports of the unit at Basildon Hospital.
Too often women are being let down, with maternity units simply not having the staff to deliver a safe level of care.
Last week I wrote to the Secretary of State, a letter you can read here: Letter to Steve Barclay on maternity services.
Labour’s commitment to delivering the biggest expansion of our NHS workforce in history will ensure we have the staff needed to provide pregnant women and new mothers the level of care and support they need.
