About Feryal

Portrait 1.1.jpg

I grew up in the London Borough of Hackney, where I came to serve as a councillor from my mid 20’s. My background is in science, having studied Biomedical Science followed by a Masters in Bioinformatics at university. As someone who worked in the NHS in Pathology for six years, I’ve seen it at its best – a world class service with some of the most talented people you could hope to work with.

I served 14 years as a local councillor and a member of the cabinet for nearly a decade and was Deputy Leader of the council for 2 years.

I have a keen interest in the environment having served as Cabinet Member for Environment for 6 years, where I led on transformative initiatives to tackle and improve air quality. I led the development of play streets and school streets initiatives, creating places for young children to play on their doorsteps in spaces usually dominated by cars.

I served as the deputy chair of the London Councils Transport and Environment committee and served as a board member on the London Wastes and Recycling Board (LWARB).

During my time as the lead member for parks, I worked to raise the importance of the impact green spaces and parks had on health and wellbeing, and the need to invest in them. I hugely value the green spaces we have in Enfield North and I want to work to improve green spaces provision in the east of Enfield North.

I am a member of several All-Party Parliamentary Groups, and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Previously, I have served as an Opposition Whip, the Parliamentary Private Secretary for the Labour Party’s Shadow Housing, Communities and Local Government team, as well as sitting on the Environmental Audit Committee.

In November 2023, I was appointed Shadow Minister for Crime Reduction.

About Enfield North

Enfield North is diverse in culture, varied in privilege, and has contrasting physical landscapes. Enfield town is a bustling market town surrounded by rural spots of natural beauty and is a place where people from across the world have found their homes.

Socio-economically, the A10 is the dividing line of wealth in the constituency, with higher rates of poverty and poor health to the east of the road than that of the west. Since 2010, Enfield North has keenly felt the impact of austerity, whether that it with the reduced number of police officers on the streets, Enfield Council’s budget being cut by £100 million, or the 10% reduction in GP practices.

Despite this, Enfield has a thriving high street, its suburbs and communities are sought after places to live with some of the best schools in London. Chase Farm Hospital is the local lifeline, caring for Enfield residents. Enfield Town football club, which is fan-owned, is based here, as well as the Tottenham Hotspur academy. It is home to Forty Hall vineyard, which produces delicious, organic English wine.
