Weekly Round-Up

This week we have seen the devastating descent into war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin’s attack is an unprovoked, unjustifiable outrage and a heinous violation of international law that will have tragic consequences.

The Labour Party stands with our allies and partners in condemning it in the strongest possible terms, and we must maintain and strengthen our unity and resolve.

The hardest possible sanctions must be taken against all those linked to Putin and against the Russian government’s interests, working in a coordinated and unified way with our allies to ensure the Putin regime faces the severest possible consequences.

The Labour Party’s commitment to NATO is unshakeable - and the alliance has strongly condemned Putin’s actions.

We must move in lockstep with our NATO allies and take steps to reinforce NATO members on the Eastern flank.

It is right that Britain has provided support to Ukraine to defend itself - and this should continue.

After more than a decade of inaction, the influence of corrupt Russian money must now be extricated from the UK.

If the Prime Minister is serious about this, then his first port of call should be looking into some of his own parties' donors.

Black Maternal Health

We saw damning figures this week which showed that black women are four times more likely to suffer miscarriage.

It is shocking that black women are less likely to receive the care they need when pregnant and, tragically, more likely to lose their child. This demands urgent and meaningful action.

After 12 years of Tory mismanagement of our NHS, inequalities are widening and maternity care is getting worse.

Yet, despite promises from the Government to hire more midwives, the number employed in the NHS is falling.

Labour will recruit and retain the staff needed to provide all pregnant women with the security they deserve and introduce a new Race Equality Act to tackle the structural inequalities which have long existed in our society.

Enfield Town Visit

It was a pleasure to visit Enfield Town Football Club during recess and catch up with the team about some of the great community work they are doing.

Whilst the result wasn’t ideal, it was wonderful to see such a passionate and enthusiastic set of supporters who are really on board with the community focussed direction of the club.

I’m looking forward to getting back to the club again soon, and hopefully see a well-deserved Town win!
