Local MP slams Tory plan to slash Universal Credit for thousands of families in Enfield North

Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North, has called on the Government to urgently cancel their plans to slash Universal Credit by more than £1000 per year in April - a move that would affect thousands of families in Enfield North.

Clark’s call came as the Government refused to back Labour’s House of Commons motion scrapping the cut.

Under current Government plans, 13,495 people in Enfield North who claim Universal Credit will see their income slashed by £20 a week as cuts come into effect in April.

Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North, said:

“Families across Enfield North have had to make so many sacrifices over the past year, and Universal Credit has been a crucial lifeline for many households.  But instead of providing support for low-income families, Conservative MP’s are instead choosing to push them further into hardship by cutting this lifeline by £20 a week.

“Protecting families should have been at the forefront of the Government’s response, but they are being left behind as the Government wastes billions of pounds of taxpayers money on the failed test and trace system, and on contracts for Tory donors.

“It is unthinkable that the Government are choosing to slash Universal Credit as this most critical point of the pandemic. I will continue to stand up for struggling families across Enfield North, and call on Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak to cancel the cut.”
