Feryal Clark MP condemns Government plan to increase council tax in Enfield North
Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North, has urgently called on the government to scrap a planned 5% council tax rise that will add £100 to annual household council tax bills for the average Band D home in Enfield North.
The Tory Government today opposed Labour’s motion to stop a Council Tax rise for constituents in Enfield North.
Enfield Council faces a funding gap because of income lost during the pandemic and the additional cost of keeping communities safe from covid-19.
Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North, said:
“During this most critical point of the pandemic, families in Enfield North are already worried about the future of their jobs and how they will continue to pay the bills. It is unthinkable that instead of providing support for those struggling, the Government plans to raise council tax and increase the financial burdens facing families.
“After promising to support local councils through the pandemic, the Government have backtracked and councils are now experiencing a funding gap, forcing them into raising council tax in order to protect vital services.
“The Government must stop the council tax rise and provide some certainty for thousands of struggling families in Enfield North, who are already enduring the additional blows to their household income from frozen wages and cuts to Universal Credit. Families must not be made to pay for the Government’s broken promises.”
