Weekly Round-Up
I want to start today’s weekly update by remembering the 52 people who tragically lost their lives in the appalling terrorist attack on 7 July 2005. I pay tribute to those who ran towards danger, from emergency service personnel to transport workers and members of the public who helped those in need.
This week marked the NHS’ 75th birthday. The NHS is the pride of our nation. It has done so much for families around the country, including mine. While this is a cause for celebration for this amazing institution, it is also a time to reflect on the current state of our healthcare system. 13 years of Conservative austerity has left our public services on the brink, and it will be up to Labour, as usual, to revive our economy and make our NHS fit for the future.
Enterprise Cooperative Trust
It was great to have a local difference-maker in Parliament this week. Enterprise Cooperative Trust held an event on Tuesday, highlighting some important opportunities for students looking to get into employment.
There were some great speeches throughout the event about the amazing work they do locally.
We heard some amazing speeches from the students, and the rap at the end was a personal highlight.
Enfield Film Premiere
A hard-hitting movie about grooming and exploitation, filmed in Enfield with young people from the borough, made its debut this week at a red-carpet premiere event at Cineworld Enfield.
The film is aimed at the professional community and community leaders nationally and will be used as an educational tool to raise awareness of the risks of exploitation and to educate young people and their parents on how to stay safe.
Find out more and watch the film here.
Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election
I had a brilliant morning on Tuesday talking to residents about the upcoming by-election and the brilliant Labour candidate, Danny Beales.
People have made it clear they want change for this country and want the Tories out. The best way to do that is by voting Labour on the 20th of July.
Barnardo’s Drop In Event
It was great to see Barnardo’s in Parliament and speak about their work keeping children safe from sexual and criminal exploitation.
Emerging technologies and crises have led to new threats of exploitation to children. We need to combat these and ensure their voices are heard.
Sivas Massacre
Last Sunday was 30 years since the Sivas Massacre. To commemorate this, I wrote to the Foreign Secretary. Alevis in the UK and around the world continue to call on the Turkish state to deliver justice for the victims. This has still not been delivered.
You can see my letter here.
Justice delayed is justice denied.
