Weekly Round-Up
This Sunday I will be joining leaders from across our community in Enfield for a moving Remembrance Sunday Service.
We must always remember the sacrifice of those who serve and have given their lives in defence of our country.
King’s Speech
This week marked the occasion of the King's Speech, the first for King Charles, outlining the Conservative government’s plans for Britain before the next general election. If there was ever proof that this government is completely out of ideas, it was laid bare this week.
They announced the lowest number of bills to carry over since 2014, and many were watered down and weakened versions of their original selves, failing to tackle the huge problems our country faces.
A major part of the Speech and the government’s agenda is to water down the United Kingdom’s environmental pledges. They have mandated annual oil and gas licensing in the North Sea, despite the government’s own Energy Secretary admitting that energy bills may not come down as a result of this proposal.
They have utterly failed on housing, and many in Enfield are left to pay the price. The government still have not abolished Section 21 evictions, despite pledging to do so four years ago. They are now waiting until the courts are reformed, which means more families must suffer as this government gets its act together. Another missed opportunity to get rid no fault evictions from a government that simply doesn’t care.
There was no Mental Health Act, despite promises last year of a big piece of legislation to modernise the current Act.
The legislative agenda is uninspiring and unambitious, to say the least, and it massively fails to deliver the change this country needs.
The Tories are completely out of ideas and drive, which the PM admits, but he has no solutions for the issues facing the country.
It is evermore clear that change can only be delivered through a Labour government.
Rail Ticket Offices Saved
After 750,000 consultation responses, the Government has U-Turned on their decision to close ticket offices in Enfield North and around the country.
It was strikingly obvious from the start that passengers and staff were not considered in the proposed closures.
Thanks to all of you who voiced your views and concerns on these proposed closures, you made your voice heard and made a real difference.
Also, thank you to all the residents who signed my petition to stop the Government from closing ticket offices in Brimsdown, Enfield Lock & Gordon Hill.
St George’s Primary School
It was brilliant to visit St. George’s Catholic Primary School yesterday for the launch of U.K. Parliament Week!
Pupils questioned me on my role as a Member of Parliament, and why I wanted to become one.
I look forward to visiting them again in the future!
Parliament’s Constituency Garden of Remembrance
This Wednesday I visited Parliament’s Constituency Garden of Remembrance to plant a tribute on behalf of constituents of Enfield North.
We honour all those who gave their service and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
