Weekly Round-Up

Today is International Workers Memorial Day.

This is a day to remember all those who lost their lives at work & pledge to keep the living safe. Remember the dead, fight for the living.

In Parliament, we had an extremely busy week.

Firstly, we had Labour’s Water Quality Bill, an effort to end the sewage scandal once and for all. No-one in Enfield should have to worry about whether they are able to enjoy our areas of outstanding beauty or if they are encountering raw sewage by taking a dip in our waters.

But in 2022 alone there were 975 recorded sewage spills into the River Lea before it reached Enfield North. That’s over 7700 hours of accumulated sewage being pumped into our river.

Labour would clean up our waters – and set legally binding targets to end 90% of sewage discharges by 2030.

Then, on Wednesday, I voted against the cruel Illegal Migration Bill. The crisis we are seeing in Sudan shows just how important a compassionate policy towards refugees is. However, this bill is a shame and inhumane, designed only to chase headlines.

Labour believes in strong border security and a properly managed and controlled asylum system so the UK does our bit alongside other countries to help those fleeing persecution and conflict. Right now, under the Tories we have neither of those things.

This bill fails on all accounts.

Enfield North CLP Meeting

Thanks to all those that turned up to the Enfield North CLP meeting last night.

There were some really important issues discussed regarding our area and community.

These are great opportunities for members to get together and discuss matters of mutual interest.

All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for London

This week it was announced that I was re-elected as Vice Chair for the APPG for London.

The APPG for London is a forum for MPs and Peers to work together on a cross-party basis to strengthen the capital's voice in Parliament. The group’s purpose is to promote the capital in the interests of all Londoners.

Being Vice Chair of this group is a huge privilege for me, it allows me to further promote the interests of Enfield and London in Parliament.

Royal National Institute of Blind People Reception

It was fantastic to have RNIB in Parliament to learn about the additional cost of living costs to those living with sight loss.

I have done lots of amazing work with RNIB and it is always great to catch up with some familiar faces.

Their excellent helpline is here for anyone that requires support and advice.

Neighbourhood Watch Network

It was great to see the Neighbourhood Watch Network and CEO John Hayward-Cripps in parliament this week and hear about their new Community Safety Charter.

For 40 years they have played a vital role in keeping our communities safe. But now, their role has become more important than ever, as Tory cuts mean fewer police on our streets. Residents and communities have been forced to take their own measures to ensure their neighbourhoods are safe.
