Weekly Round-Up
Today is International Nurses Day, so I want to start this weekly update by saying thank you to all the nurses in Enfield and around the country for everything they do. The unwavering commitment to care you provide for patients and their families is remarkable and does not go unnoticed.
This week was shorter in Parliament due to the King’s Coronation Bank Holiday weekend. Prior to the weekend though, we had local elections around the country.
The results were hugely successful for the Labour Party. We picked up 528 seats, from all around the country, from Teesside to Kent, and became the largest party in local government for the first time since 2002. The Conservatives, by contrast, endured a torrid night, losing more than 1,000 seats and control of 48 councils.
Labour put the rising cost of living at the heart of its local election campaign, promising to bring in a more substantial windfall tax on oil and gas giants as well as freeze council tax this year if it was in power. It was brilliant to see Labour gains all around the country and it’s clear to see that we’re on course for a majority Labour government.
The Tories are out of ideas and running out of time.
Lastly, I hope everyone had an amazing weekend for the King’s Coronation, it was lovely to spend with some of you at the various street parties in Enfield. I have included photos below.
The King’s Coronation
The Coronation was a great celebratory event and many people will remember where they were and who they watched it with, but most importantly it was great to see communities across Enfield coming together to enjoy good food and company. I spent Saturday morning at St James’ Church in Enfield for their Coronation celebration.
There was bunting, cake, large screens, and arts & crafts to keep the toddler preoccupied – the perfect way to watch the coronation! Photos are below.
Then on Monday I attended the Glebe Avenue Street party. It was fantastic to hear from so many residents about the volunteering they do in our community, for our community.
It was also a pleasure to judge the cake competition!
Huge thanks to Peter Godfrey & the rest of Glebe Avenue residents for putting on an amazing celebration. Photos can be found here.
Renters Reform Bill
This week in Parliament it was frustrating to see yet more delays with the Government’s Renters Reform Bill. This was promised four years ago – yet here we are in 2023, with still no action.
This legislation is so important for residents in Enfield. I have seen the devastating impact of Section 21 evictions on my constituents through no-fault of their own.
That’s why yesterday I wrote to the Secretary of State on this matter – demanding action and reform to the current housing legislation. You can see the letter here.
Diabetes UK
It was great to see Diabetes UK in parliament on Wednesday.
More than 5 million people live in the U.K. with diabetes, but Diabetes UK’s new report shows too many are missing out on vital checks. See their new report here.
Enfield Neighbourhood Fund
It was great to see local community groups and businesses receive funding from the Enfield Neighbourhood Fund.
I understand the funding was awarded to projects that address important issues in our community, such as poverty and inequality.
Congratulations to St Mary’s Magdalene Church in Enfield Chase. I commend all the work they do in this area. You can read the full article in the Enfield Dispatch here.
