Feryal Clark MP supports calls from grassroots fans to scrap the “European Super League”.
Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North, has joined calls from grassroots supporters to scrap plans for a breakaway “European Super League” announced yesterday by six Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, whose Hotspur Way training ground sits on the outskirts of Enfield.
Following an urgent question in the House of Commons this afternoon, Clark has joined colleagues from across the political divide in criticising a move felt by many to motivated by financial gain for those at the very top of the pile, with little thought for dedicated fans or grassroots clubs.
The 2019 Conservative manifesto pledged “a fan-led review of football governance”, and despite calls from both Labour and Conservative politicians, including former Conservative Sports Minister Helen Grant who herself, supported by Labour, called in January for an independent regulator to examine the issue of football governance, such a review promised by the government is yet to materialise.
Feryal Clark said: “I support calls from the Tottenham Hotspur Supporter’s Trust and others for clubs to abandon these reckless plans which are motivated by the greed of already wealthy owners, and show frank disregard for grassroots fans who are the lifeblood of football in this country.
“Despite repeated calls from across the political divide, the Government have continually failed to deliver on their commitment for a fan-led review of football governance, which could have prevented this situation.
“Clubs like Enfield Town FC, the first supporter-owned club in the country, in my constituency show football at it’s very best, a sport which brings communities together and is open and inclusive to everyone.
“This proposal rides roughshod over grassroots clubs like Enfield Town and takes the soul out of a sport which should always belong to those who are at its’ heart, the fans.
“I sincerely hope all those involved in this proposal reflect on the widespread opposition it has received and take into account the voices of fans, without whom football would be nothing.”
