Weekly Round-Up
This week, the Chancellor had a choice to make in his Spring Statement.
He could have chosen to offer a helping hand to the millions of families and businesses across the country who are struggling to cope with the cost of living crisis.
However, his response came nowhere near to matching the gravity of the situation facing people in Enfield North and across the UK.
The Chancellor has left households and businesses to fend for themselves as we’re set to see the biggest drop to incomes on record this year.
For every £6 the Chancellor has taken in tax since becoming entering Number 11, he gave back just £1.
Rishi Sunak is raising taxes again and again, with Britain facing its highest tax burden in 70 years, only to offer crumbs just before an election.
This is a cynical Chancellor who is asking struggling families to pay for the Tory election campaign.
The British people will see through it.
Newroz Event
It was a pleasure earlier this week to host so many friends and colleagues at Parliament’s Newroz celebrations.
Newroz is a celebration of the coming of spring, new life, and hope for the year ahead, and after the challenges we have faced in recent times that has never been more important.
The sense of togetherness and community, which we can feel so strongly this evening, was central to guiding us through the pandemic.
Whether opening food banks, providing hot meals, or simply being a welcoming space, Kurds in my constituency and across the UK have shown the very best of our country in the last few years.
Only by continuing in that same vein will our communities be able to not just recover but come back even stronger as we emerge from the pandemic.
Endometriosis Action Month
Endometriosis is a condition which affects 1 in 10 women, and there are thousands of women across our country who are suffering because endometriosis care is simply not good enough.
It is absolutely right that rather than awareness, this March is Endometriosis Action Month.
Women cannot wait for more talking, they need action from government now.
In my role as Shadow Minister for Primary Care & Patient Safety, I will continue to hold the government’s feet to the fire on their lack of focus on women’s health.
They have dragged their feet on the publication of the women’s health strategy for far too long, and women deserve better.
Chace Community School Visit
It was a pleasure to join students from Chace Community School, as they took part in some great sessions at Parliament's Education Centre.
They gave me some very tricky questions, and I've no doubt some of them will make their way to the green benches in the future!
